Provision of Municipal Infrastructure I-IV in Iraq

The Muthanna Water Supply Project, funded by KfW Development Bank and the Government of Iraq, aims to provide a sustainable potable water supply to the districts of Al Khidr and Al Daraji in Al Muthanna Governorate, serving approximately 160,000 residents by 2027.

The project entails the design, construction, and operation of a new Water Treatment Plant, a brine disposal system, the expansion and rehabilitation of the water distribution network, and the installation of household water meters. In parallel, it includes comprehensive capacity-building measures aimed at strengthening the operational, financial, and technical capabilities of the Muthanna Water Directorate.

As part of the project, internal roads and parking areas were designed and reviewed in accordance with the applicable design criteria to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable vehicular movement at the designated design speeds. The scope included the development of horizontal and vertical geometric alignments, as well as the design of simple at-grade intersections.

Detailed road spot elevation plans were prepared to ensure proper integration with the existing external road network and the finished levels of internal buildings. Road profiles were also developed to facilitate efficient stormwater collection and drainage.

Technical deliverables included the preparation of a Basis of Design Report outlining the applicable design criteria and standards, together with proposed typical roadway cross-sections and pavement details. Upon completion of the design, Bills of Quantities (BOQs) were prepared in accordance with the relevant technical standards and specifications.

The project was implemented in accordance with international standards, with a strong focus on environmental, social, health, and safety compliance. It targeted improved service delivery, enhanced revenue collection, and greater gender inclusion within the water sector.
