NEOM sits in the northwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. NEOM aims to develop the region to attract investments; where the size and number of the developments and construction projects associated with NEOM constitute a significant challenge for environmental protection and resource use.
The project is a network of routes throughout the mountains region that will be initially utilized to support the construction activity of the region, and then be converted into surface mobility, underground mobility, and logistics & emergency routes for operational purposes.
In order to achieve this purpose, ECG is assigned to provide the detailed design and IFC package for the mountain roads separated into three Packages A, B & C as follows:
- Package A: 8 roads, 8 bridges, and a tunnel
- Package B: 11 roads, 1 bridge, and 2 tunnels
- Package C: 9 roads and a bridge
The roads have a total length of approximately 48km and includes (28) roads. They are to be prepared as a single carriageway road with 3.65 m lane width per direction and 1.5m hard shoulder on both sides; making the total width 13.3m. In addition, there are a number of bridges and tunnels that are located in specific stations.
The hydrological and flood mitigation studies are considered to provide the required protection along the roads’ alignments; specially for such mountainous area.
