Greater Cairo Waterworks Master Plan

Potable Water Master Plan (1977 to 2000) for Greater Cairo:

Coverage: domestic, industrial and irrigation.

Population increase: 8 to 16 million.

Consumption increase: 2 to 8 million m³/day.

Scope: high priority projects and rehabilitation.

Extent: 2,500 km pipelines, water treatment plants and reservoirs.

Location: Suburbs from Helwan in the South to Heliopolis and El Abour in the North and Giza and Shoubra El Kheima.

Master Planning Services:

• Measurement of water flow and pressure at water production facilities. Cole pitometer /24 hour flow measurements in distribution network.
• Inspection and evaluation of existing water meters. Inspection and evaluation of the meter maintenance, repair and calibration. Recommendations to upgrade water metering system.
• Leak survey programmes, sonic leak detection equipment in conjunction with metal detectors, of pipes, valves and appurtenances. 180 km of mains 400 mm dia. or larger. Recommendations to reduce leakage.
• Water wastage survey showed that consumer losses due to defective sanitary fixtures was a significant percentage of the daily production.
• Recommendations for water conservation programmes were prepared and presented to the Greater Cairo Water Organization.
