Cairo and Giza Water Supply Master Plan

Project Description

  • Potable Water Master Plan for a population of 15,000,000:

Cairo, Giza, new urban communities around Cairo: Badr, Shorouk, Obour, 15th May, New Cairo, rural areas and urban expansion in Greater Cairo and Shobra Elkhema area. 5 year improvement plan (priority projects).

    Data Collection and Evaluation Stage:

Presentation of raw data, databases and charts, to forecast future demands for proposed developments.

Data sourced from Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, urban planning maps approved by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development:

    • Cadastral and contour maps (current / future urban boundaries).
    • Maps of potable water transmission lines and distribution networks (diameters, types and status).
    • Maps of utilities (electricity, gas, telecommunications, railways, roads, water courses and sewerage and drainage systems).
    • Plans and urban studies: land use, urban boundaries, pivotal urban expansions and squatter areas.
    • Demographic studies: population density and growth rates, impact on economic and social development and infrastructure of population growth.
    • Water Sources: Permanent sources (rivers, lakes and ground water). Quality impacts of abstraction rates.

Identification of sources to meet potable water demands.

Preliminary Report: Assessment of the current situation. Necessary works to secure water supply. Water quality standards (Egyptian Code). Specifications and quality assurance.

Development Proposals: Required works, cost estimates and durations to achieve the 5 year plan.

High Priority Projects (5 Year Plan):

Preparation of tender documentation for integrated works to develop and raise the efficiency of potable water stations, distribution networks to overcome operation problems and water distribution network

problems. Designs based on hydraulic analysis, using computer programs / software and water hammer studies:

    • General and special conditions
    • Technical specifications
    • Preliminary drawings
    • Bills of Quantity
    • Estimated value for required works

    Preparing 2037 Master Plan:

Studies, analysis recommendations for/of alternatives. Costed annual implementation proposals. Presented as a matrix: scope, duration and cost. Detailed executive and budget action plan. Consideration of the urban expansions, current and future urban boundaries:

    • Studies on Potable Water Consumption

Identification of population growth rates and consumption rates (domestic, commercial and industrial).

    • Hydraulic Analysis for Future Situation

    Hydraulic models were developed to:

    • Identify alternatives to balance future water demand against current water production capacity.
    • Propose options for development of potable water networks, storage capacities and reservoir locations.
    • Detailed Description of Development Alternatives

Detailed description, design drawings and cost estimates for alternatives:

    • Production sources.
    • Potable water distribution networks.
    • Pumping stations and reservoirs.
    • Economic and Financial Studies
      • Economic costs for alternatives: investment cost for expansion works, support and rehabilitation
      • comprising costs for land, building, equipment, operation, maintenance and power.
      • Comprehensive analysis of investment costs.
      • Economic analysis of alternatives: adopted approach, cost estimates, interest in addition to technical and economic comparison of alternatives.
      • Identifying the best alternative to develop the service and achieve objectives of the Master Plan.
      • Preparing project implementation plan and implementation time schedule over 5 year plans. Annual cost estimates.
      • Recommending Annual Expenditure Programme.
